I was asked to make a rug for the lobby of a new condo in Miami. The artist Julian Schnabel was the art director for the project, and his team wanted this Schnabel painting translated into a 13′ x 18′ rug. The deadline was very tight, but because I deal with only a small number of manufacturers, I have an excellent relationship with them. I decided on a hand-tufted New Zealand wool piece for two reasons: Hand-tufting produces a very graphic image, and New Zealand wool is strong, beautiful, and cleanable. Here you see a master tufter putting the finishing touches on the rug.
