TRUE CUSTOM RUGS–NOT MIX AND MATCH
Our Rugs Look Different Because They Are Different
CUSTOM-DESIGNED JUST FOR YOU
My custom rugs are designed for specific spaces in a client’s home. Rather than just changing a few colors or resizing a rug, I usually design an entirely new piece for the residence. This story illustrates how I work.
A New York designer wanted a sophisticated collection of rugs for a spacious Manhattan co-op. She chose a two-height, New Zealand wool and natural silk multi-colored helix design to establish a welcoming entrance. Then I created an abstract design of neutral tones plus touches of red for the living room. The strong color and irregular edges add vitality to space. The adjacent dining area picks up the same tones for the small geometric pattern, and a border with a golden silk helix ties these three rugs together.
Greys with touches of silver and gold color the elegant, high-low New Zealand wool and natural silk rug in the master bedroom. For a change of pace, as well as ease of cleaning, I used a hand-tufted rug, rather than a hand-knotted one, for the teenage son’s room. The pattern is a blow-up of upholstery fabric, but the colors tie this rug to the rest of the collection. Finally, for the guest room, I used neutrals with touches of coral and gold to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for this room.
I then ordered strike-offs (samples) to show to the designer. It takes 2-3 weeks to get strike-offs. If something needs to be changed, I will have a new strike-off made at no additional cost. Custom rugs normally take from 6-8 weeks for completion after strike-off approval; in this case, the clients were in a rush, so for a 15% upcharge (used to hire an additional team of weavers), these rugs were made in 4 weeks, plus one week for shipping from Nepal.
